Top 5 Things to do in Cozumel, Mexico
About this time last year we were gearing up for our fabulous vacation to Cozumel, Mexico with our friends at Turismo Cozumel! We had an awesome time during our week stay. We have compiled a list of our TOP 5 favorite activities on the island (in no particular order) as well as some hotel, drink and food recommendations we have for anyone planning a visit to this stunning little island of Cozumel!
#1: Pueblo del Maiz
If you enjoy cultural experiences, Pueblo del Maiz is the place for you! During our tour of the pueblo we learned about the Ancient Mayan civilization in Cozumel, Mexico and had the chance to participate in ceremonies, dances, games and food preparation! We even got to try on ornate Mayan Headdresses (and take selfies, of course) as well as compete in a game of Pok-Ta-Tok (which is much harder than it looks)!
#2: The Mayan Cacao Company
Calling all chocolate lovers!! The tour of The Mayan Cacao Company was an interactive experience that takes you through the history of one of the most popular foods in the world: Chocolate! We learned all about the discovery of cacao and the process the Ancient Mayans used to produce this highly sought after treat. I even had the chance to grind up cacao beans and create my own chocolate using local ingredients! The tour wraps up at a bar that serves the most decadent tropical chocolate drinks; my favorite was the chocolate margarita — Yum!!
#3. Islands Beach Club
Holy cow, this place has everything you could ever want to at the beach! From paddle boarding, ziplining, riding jet skis to hidden beaches, and snorkeling. Or maybe just have a dip in the pool and chill beach-side next to some of the most turquoise waters I have ever seen! Oh, and did I mention their food was to die for? Some of the best coconut shrimp I have ever experience in my life!! Islands Beach Club is the perfect spot for adrenaline junkies or for those who enjoy sipping piña coladas by the beach.
#4. Discover Mexico Park
Although, Discover Mexico Park has many things you can do (tequila tasting and Mexican flavors tour to name a few), we chose to do the Alebrije Painting Workshop! I have always been a fan of this style of painting and being able to create my own little alebrije figure was a ton of fun! The two of us also had the chance to tour the Museum of Mexican Traditional Arts, the Dioramic Garden, and watch the Papantla Fliers soar through the air. We ended our tour with a tasty traditional Mexican meal at the snack bar.
#5. Stingray Beach
Love to swim with stingray? We do, too! Stingray Beach was a fun day of snorkeling and getting up close with these quirky creatures (don’t worry, they no longer have their barbs). During the snorkel tour we swam around in the enclosure with the stingray, tropical fish and even nurse sharks! After our snorkel our group went over to the shallow end of the enclosure and had the chance to meet, hold, and feed the stingray. It really was the perfect afternoon for adults and kids alike!
Where to stay in Cozumel…
We had the chance to stay in 3 different locations around the island…Secrets Aura Resort & Spa, Cozumel Beach House and Casa Mexicana; each very different from one another!
Secrets Aura Resort & Spa is located in a beautiful spot on the island and is a perfect place to stay for those who love adults only, all-inclusive resorts!! Secrets included 7 restaurants with an array of international cuisine as well as 5 bars all around the premises. Our personal favorite was Gohan Sushi and the Sky Bar, situated rooftop, it was there perfect spot to catch sunset while enjoying dinner and drinks.
Cozumel Beach House is located less than a mile down the street from Secrets Aura but is a completely different atmosphere. The Beach House is a Bed & Breakfast in a quiet, rural area with a private beach and infinity pool. We really enjoyed getting away from the busy resort atmosphere and chilling out poolside. Also our host, Jasianna, was more than accommodating and became a fast friend!
Casa Mexicana is located in the center of the city of San Miguel de Cozumel. This hotel boasts incredible views of the bustling city as well as the chance to watch the massive cruise ships come in and out of port. A great spot for those who enjoy exploring cities, shopping, and catching nightlife.
Food and Drink Recommendations in Cozumel
After only a few days on the island we quickly developed some favorite spots around San Miguel de Cozumel!!
La Internacional Cerveceria - Being the craft beer lovers we are, we already had La Internacional Cerveceria on our radar before arriving in Cozumel. Needless to say, we became regulars at this place!! La Inernacional Cerveceria had a TON of choices in craft beer from Mexico and from all over the world!
COZ Coffee Roasting Company - Home of some of the most delicious peanut butter coffee! COZ had a nice location in San Miguel de Cozumel, right off the main plaza. Our first stop each morning!
La Mission - What can I say about La Mission other than that the food and drinks are absolutely delicious! This spot had a cool, open air atmosphere with nature surrounding you while you eat. We got the Mexican Sampler plate which had a little bit of everything…and the queso is definitely a must!
Colores y Sabores - Speaking of delicious, Colores y Sabores is a small, off the street spot with some delicious local eats. Colores y Sabores also had some awesome drink specials where we enjoyed 2-for-1 piña coladas and tamales to die for!
Mar-Y-Juana - …because sometimes you just have to be a tourist! We grabbed a beer gravity bomb to split and quickly found out that this spot has FANTASTIC local bands that play most every night!
